If you were one of the people already looking for a recap of tonight’s Conan episode andwere unable to find… well, that’s because there is no episode to night. Apparently Conan has adopted the same strategy that they use for Lopez which is Monday through Thursday no Fridays. I’m not sure if this is a good or bad thing yet. Fridays in people’s minds are reserved for going out and doing things, if that is the understanding, it make sense to not have a show that people aren’t going to watch. On the other hand, The big network rivals have their Friday shows, and Conan is not competing with them. Anyone tuning into Conan may find themselves switching over to a different host and there’s going to be a small percentage that stay.

The Mummenschantz Conundrum
Previous Conan on TBS Episode Recaps are in the related posts near the Bottom
Before we get into the episode, a little bit about ratings. The ratings have dropped from their 1st show and some people are acting like this is surprising. Conan on TBS beat two network backed shows from a basic cable station. This is a big deal. I suspect they will dip a little bit for the remainder of the week before leveling off in the next 2-3. The numbers are still great for a basic cable show, and really I don’t think the point is to re-capture the “tonight show audience”. This is mostly for a younger demographic and those people who supported him during the fiasco and during the Late Late years. On to Conan Episode 4.
Conan’s monologue tonight was much stronger than yesterdays, including a bit where he discussed the Kanye West news. A clip of Kanye rambling on and on played in small PIP as Conan went through no less than 3 jokes. Kanye is crazy! Conan then announced that basic cable stars had come to welcome him. Out comes Bruce Jenner or Kim Kardashians dad as he is know to you youngsters. He was followed by “a hoarder” from AMC and king crabs from The Interviews and Video of Julie Bowen inside!
Murder, She Tweeted
***Episode 3 Recap is now up !*** Interesting idea to name the episodes of a talk show. I’m not sure if that’s been done before. So, good news for Conan fans as last night’s show drew more than 4.1 million viewers and beat Leno, Letterman and Stewart. Pretty impressive. Big numbers are a shoe-in for a debut of this much hype, so I’ll be really interested to see where average numbers sit as the show settles in. I think Conan has found a home that appreciates him to go along with his audience, so I have hope for good things. Tonight’s Episode features Tom Hanks, Jack McBrayer from 30 Rock and the reunited Soundgarden.
Conan took some time to do a little more reflecting on being back and dabbled in a little traditional monologue work to start of the show. As others have noted, Conan having no barrier between him and his guests can only be of benefit to him. The monologue lead directly into a skit which involved Conan visiting the real standards and practices rep of the show, to find out “what he could and couldn’t get away with”. This was a really funny bit. I’m predicting the new slang phrase Taking Grandma to Applebies will be sweeping the nation shortly, Tom Hanks using the phrase later just increases it’s potential value. Conan along with some staff help also tested some outfits that Conan, “might wear”, the funniest part being getting the censor to approve ass-less chaps. I laughed a lot in this segment. Keep Reading for an un-aired Soundgarden Video!
